PROPOSAL Penalties and Suspensions 2006 – 2007 The following rules for penalties and suspensions has been proposed for the 2006 -2007 PGOHA Season. This is being done in an effort to reduce some of the more "flagrant" and/or "offensive" penalties that have been creeping into our game over the last few years. All penalties for every full-time and spare player will be tracked on a game-bygame basis. When a player accumulates eight (8) penalties, he will then automatically be suspended for one (1) game. If the player accumulates another seven (7) penalties, he will then automatically be suspended for three (3) games. If the player accumulates another five (5) penalties, he will then automatically be suspended for five (5) games. Further, the player will have to meet with the Discipline Committee prior to returning to the ice after serving the five game suspension. Any of the above suspensions will carry over into the Easter Tournament, and into the following year, if necessary.
In the case of five-minute or ten-minute penalties assessed during a game, these penalties shall count as only one penalty to that player’s total. The reason for this is that five-and ten- minute penalties automatically go to the Discipline Committee for review and assessment. In other words, if a player has only four penalties, but receives a gross misconduct during a game, the Discipline Committee may choose to suspend the player for a number of games. These games do not affect the player’s total, as per the above schedule. In the above example, he would serve his suspension, and then return to play with a cumulative total of five penalties.
While this sounds quite harsh on first glance, how many of us accumulate 15 to 20 penalties over the course of a 38 game schedule? For that minority that do, we must keep them in check in order to maintain the spirit of healthy competition that our league is based on.
